Viessmann One Base: What It Is and How It Works With a Heat Pump
Most heating tech comes with its own app: one for the heat pump, another for the thermostats, a third for solar or a battery if you have them. Viessmann built something different. One Base is the platform underneath the ViCare app, and Viessmann designed it to run all of that as one connected system instead of three separate ones.
We install the Viessmann Vitocal 200-A ie, which runs on One Base, so it deserves a proper explanation: what the platform is, how it works, and what it can and can't do today.
What is Viessmann One Base?
One Base is the technology platform built into current-generation Viessmann appliances: heat pumps, boilers, ventilation units and controls. Any compatible product connects into the same system, rather than running its own isolated app and settings.
A One Base system can include Vitocal heat pumps, Vitodens boilers, Vitovent ventilation, ViCare thermostats, and solar PV or battery storage where the hardware supports it. Compatibility depends on the specific product, its generation and its firmware. Check before assuming two products will talk to each other.
How it works
ViCare: the app homeowners use
ViCare is the app that sits on top of One Base. It lets you adjust heating temperatures, set time programmes, control hot water, check system status and get fault notifications from your phone. Behind the scenes, Viessmann's Energy Management system reads all of that and optimises how the connected devices use energy, without you having to manage it manually.
The energy cockpit
ViCare includes an energy cockpit that shows current and past energy flows: how self-sufficient the system is, and how much of what it generates gets used on-site. That's the same kind of data installers used to need a separate monitoring platform to see.
ViGuide: the installer side
Installers get a separate tool called ViGuide, for commissioning, adjusting heating curves, and picking up fault history. With remote monitoring switched on, an installer can often spot a fault before it needs a site visit, which cuts down on the callouts that used to need a home visit to read an error code.
Vitoconnect, for older appliances
Vitoconnect is a separate internet interface for older Viessmann products that don't have a built-in communication module. It isn't needed for anything already running on One Base, including the Vitocal 200-A ie.
Does it work with Viessmann heat pumps?
Yes. Vitocal heat pumps are named as compatible products on One Base, and the Vitocal 200-A ie we install runs on the platform as standard. In practice that means the heat pump, its room thermostats, and, where fitted, solar or battery storage all sit inside the same ViCare app instead of three separate ones.
Viessmann is upfront about one caveat: compatibility depends on the exact model, generation and firmware. Only the current One Base generation gets this by default. An older Viessmann appliance without an integrated communication module needs Vitoconnect to join the system at all.
What it means for solar, battery and EV charging
The bigger idea behind One Base is that a heat pump bought today doesn't have to stay a standalone purchase. Add solar panels, a battery, or an EV wallbox later, and Viessmann built the platform to bring them into the same system rather than bolt on a fourth app. Viessmann also runs the ViShare Energy Community, a peer energy-sharing scheme operated by its subsidiary Energy Market Solutions, for households that want to go further than monitoring their own energy use.
Our view
We haven't run One Base on a live install ourselves yet, so everything above is what Viessmann documents, not what we've verified on site. What's on paper looks useful: one app for the heat pump, the room thermostats and anything solar or battery you add later, instead of juggling separate systems that don't talk to each other.
The real test is what happens once it's commissioned on an actual UK home, with an installer using ViGuide day to day. We'll update this once we've done that.
