What causes corrosion in heating systems

collision theory, two articles in Evernote

Geek Notes

Corrosion in a heating system is a chemistry problem: oxidation reactions inside your pipework speed up as temperature rises. Run your system hotter than it needs to for longer, and you accelerate the corrosion that shortens its working life. Keep flow temperatures no higher than necessary, and you slow the reaction rate that eventually wears out pipes and components.

here's that old rule-of-thumb, that a 10C increase in heat will double the oxidation rate. (increase in collision rate)
